By election day, the voters' list has already been prepared by enumerators. Enumerators are people who have gone from door to door collecting the names of qualified voters. When the polling stations open on election day, each voter is given a ballot on which are listed the names of the candidates in their riding. The voter then enters a voting booth so that his or her vote may be cast in secret. After the voter has marked the ballot with an "X" beside the name of the person they want to elect, the ballot is folded to ensure secrecy, and then handed back to the returning officer who deposits the ballot in the box. The votes are counted after the polls are closed on the evening of election day, and the results are released to the media.
